Understanding the Ebb & Flow System

ebbsmall

A combination of several types, the ebb and flow hydroponic system floods nutrient solution into the grow tray before draining that solution into a reservoir. Using a submerged pump powered on a timer, this system operates with fairly low maintenance requirements. Grow trays can be flooded several times over a short period of time with the schedule depending on the crop and growth stage of the plants.

Some growing medium will leave your roots vulnerable should the pump or timer stop, such as in a power outage. Roots can be destroyed if the watering cycle fails, although certain growing medium (coconut fiber, rock wool or soil-less mixtures) offers better absorption and less risk.

Experts often recommend this type of system for first timers, mainly due to the fast set up and reliable, simple operation.
